Former Panipat mayor among 11 booked for cheating

KARNAL: Police have booked 11 persons, including former mayor of the Panipat municipal corporatio­n Suresh Verma, for allegedly selling foodgrains meant for public distributi­on.

The other accused have been identified as Subhash, Jitender, Anand, Bhupender, Vinod, Prem Chand, Sadha Singh, Kuldeep and Satpal Sharma.

Complainan­t Ram Kumar Saini of Panipat alleged that the ex-mayor and the others had formed different committees for distributi­on of about 1,080 quintals of wheat and rice of the food and supplies department. But instead of distributi­ng it, they allegedly sold 468 quintals of foodgrains in the market. The complainan­t also alleged that the accused generated fake documents of beneficiar­ies to sell the

food grains in the market.

He said that even the CM’S flying squad, during a raid at his godown on Kutani road on July 12, had found 375 quintals of wheat and 93 quintals of rice to be missing, following which the FIR was registered.

The accused have been booked under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating and dishonestl­y inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 10 and 7 of the Essential Commoditie­s Act.
