LAUNCHES ‘MAHILA SHAKTI’ PROGRAMME UNDER WHICH CONGRESS’ WOMAN WORKERS WILL RUN CAMPAIGN IN HARYANA FOR SAFETY OF WOMEN

KARNAL: Accusing the ruling BJP of failure to ensure safety of women, Congress Rajya Sabha member Kumari Selja launched the ‘Mahila Shakti’ programme of her party here on Saturday.

Selja, who has recently been appointed Congress Working Committee (CWC) member, said under the programme the woman workers of the party will carry out a special campaign in the state for the safety of women.

She said the programme has been launched as the BJP governments at the Centre and in Haryana have failed to ensure the safety of women and the incidents of rape and murder of girls have become a routine affair in the state.

She said the recent incident of gangrape in Panchkula has shocked the entire country and the Congress will take up this issue in Parliament.

To a question, she said there is no need to set up a special women squad, but the government must ensure the safety of women.

She admitted that rape incidents also happened during the Congress regime but the government then took strict action. “Now, the crime against women is constantly on the rise.”

Asked about the internal bickering in the Congress leadership in Haryana, she said. “All party leaders are working to strengthen the party and all Congressmen will fight the election together.” She said the Congress high command will decide the party’s chief minister in Haryana after it comes to power in the state.

To a question about Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s act of hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the debate on the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha on Friday, she said that the Prime Minister should have shown a big heart but he tried to make it a political issue.

“But the Congress knows how to face them and they cannot stop us from raising the issues of people,” she added.
