AMRITSAR : Lopoke police have booked three persons, including a gangster, for the murder of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former sarpanch of Khiala village, Sarabjit Singh Zaildar (55), near Amritsar, on Wednesday.

The accused, gangster Gurbhej Singh aka Bheja, Dilbagh Singh aka Bagha, and his son Hoshiar Singh of Khiala village, have been booked on a complaint from Zaildar’s nephew, Samsher Singh.

“My uncle was killed due to political enmity. The father-son duo of Dilbagh and Hoshiar had also lodged a ‘false’ complaint against my uncle in a local court. Dilbagh had lost elections to my uncle and had been keeping a grudge since then,” the complainant added.

Lopoke SHO Kapil Kaushal said, “One of the accused, Gurbhej Singh, is a gangster while the father, son duo had an old enmity with the deceased.” He added that the accused were absconding.

“We have some important clues and are hopeful of solving the case in two days,” he said, adding that they had been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Zaildar, who had remained the sarpanch of his village twice, had gone to irrigate his fields on Tuesday morning.

His body with the head severed was found near a tubewell in his fields at noon. Sharp-edged weapons were used to execute the crime, police had said.
