COP LAID TO REST IN KARNAL

KARNAL: The mortal remains of sub-inspector (SI) Narender Kumar were consigned to flames with state honours at Hansi Road in Karnal on Thursday. Haryana director general of police (DGP) BS Sandhu, besides hundreds of people and officials of the district administra­tion reached to pay their last respect to the cop.

Narender and a minor girl were shot dead by assailants outside the Rohtak court complex on Wednesday in an attack that is suspected to have been ordered by the girl’s father, who was upset at her inter-caste marriage with a Dalit.

Narender is survived by his wife Meenu, daughter Khushbu and son Nishant.

Talking to mediaperso­ns the DGP assured all support to the deceased’s family and said that the government has already announced financial assistance of ₹30 lakh, besides ₹30 lakh to be given by the HDFC Bank, as the SI was a accounthol­der there.

The DGP said that efforts will also be made to provide a government job to his son.

He, however, said that giving martyr status was prerogativ­e of the government and it was upto them to decide.

“I condemn the incident and we have already registered an FIR of murder and rounded up some suspects. Preliminar­y investigat­ion reveals that the girl’s family were behind the incident,” he added.
