Abhinav appointed member of IOC’S elite Athletes’ Commission

NEW DELHI: India’s champion shooter Abhinav Bindra has been appointed member of the prestigiou­s Athletes’ Commission of the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee (IOC), the rare honour adding another feather to his illustriou­s cap.

Bindra became only the second Indian sportspers­on, after badminton ace Saina Nehwal, to be appointed to the IOC’S Athletes’ Commission.

“Humbled and privileged to be appointed a member of the @Olympics Athlete’s commission. Look forward to work hard for the athletes and the Olympic movement !” Bindra wrote on his twitter handle.

The 2008 Olympic gold medallist , Bindra shared the IOC letter on his social networking page.

“As every year and as per recommenda­tion 40 of the Olympic Agenda 2020, I have reviewed in consultati­on with the Chairs the scope and compositio­n of the IOC Commission­s. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I appoint you as a member of the Athletes’ Commission,” IOC president Thomas Bach said in the letter addressed to Bindra.

INDIAN HOCKEY TEAMS ENTER YOUTH OLYMPICS

The Indian junior men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the Hockey 5’s competitio­n at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games to be held from October 6 to 18, Internatio­nal Hockey Federation (FIH) announced on Thursday.

In the men’s category, India will face stiff competitio­n from defending champion Australia and silver medallists Canada along with hosts Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Poland, Mexico, Malaysia, Kenya, Zambia and Vanuatu.

The women’s team is clubbed with 2014 gold medallists China, hosts Argentina, Austria, Poland, Uruguay, Mexico, Australia, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Vanuatu will be the other 11 teams giving them competitio­n.

DELHI HALF MARATHON ON OCTOBER 21

NEW DELHI: The Delhi half marathon will be held on October 21. Besides 21km, open 10km, senior citizens run (4.3km) and champions with disability (2.4km) events will also be organised at the IAAF Golf Label event. Registrati­on for 21km and 10km will commence from Friday and close on September 7. But for other events entries close on September 28.

INDIAN GIRLS SHINE IN JR NBA WORLD C’SHIPS

ORLANDO (US): Indian girls produced a stellar show to beat a combined South American team 40-37 in their final pool match to register their maiden victory at the under-14 Jr NBA World Championsh­ips here.

After losing their first two pool matches, the Indian girls eked out a close win. They led in the first three periods 12-9, 14-13, 7-6 before losing the last period 7-9.

PENG SHUAI BANNED FOR CORRUPTION

LONDON : China’s former world number one doubles star Peng Shuai was banned for six months and fined $10,000 on Wednesday for attempting to force her doubles partner to withdraw from Wimbledon in 2017, the Tennis Integrity Unit announced.

“Peng Shuai was found to have used coercion and offered the possibilit­y of financial reward in return for her main draw partner agreeing to withdraw from the ladies doubles event at Wimbledon 2017,” the TIU said in a statement.

NADAL LEADS WAY INTO TORONTO THIRD ROUND

TORONTO: Top seed Rafael Nadal blew past patchy Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday to begin his quest for a fourth Canadian trophy at the Toronto Masters.

The world number one Spaniard will play Stan Wawrinka, who staged another fightback in three sets, beating Marton Fucsovics 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (12/10). Defending champion Alexander Zverev also advanced easily beating Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-4. Former top-ranked Novak Djokovic sent Canadian Peter Polansky to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.

PLISKOVA, KERBER UPSET IN MONTREAL

MONTREAL: The punishing serve that propelled Karolina Pliskova to the top of the tennis world last year proved ineffectiv­e against Kiki Bertens at the Rogers Cup in Montreal as the Dutchwoman cruised to a 6-2 6-2 victory.

Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber lost 6-4 6-1 to Alize Cornet of France.
