WOMAN, IN HER COMPLAINT, SAID HARASSMENT STARTED A FEW MONTHS AFTER MARRIAGE IN 2013

TARN TARAN : Tarn Taran police have booked a Kurukshetrabased man and his five relatives for allegedly thrashing his wife and harassing her for dowry, on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Charanjit Singh, his mother Jaswinder Kaur, father Partap Singh of Kurukshetra, Haryana, besides his relatives Gurpreet Kaur, Sarabjit Kaur and Jaspal Singh of Sangrur.

In her complaint lodged on May 16, the victim, Rajwinder Kaur, 26, of Kotali village said that she had got married to Charanjit in 2013 and the couple has two daughters. Soon after marriage, her husband and in-laws started demanding a car as dowry and even started thrashing her. A few months ago, unable to take the harassment anymore, Rajwinder left the house and went to stay at her parents’ house in Tarn Taran.

Assistant sub inspector (ASI) Gurmeet Singh said, “A case under Section 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 120 B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of IPC has been registered against the accused. Teams have been dispatched to arrest them.” Though the woman lodged the complaint on May 16, the police didn’t register the case right away as they wanted to investigate the matter first. The ASI said, “The case was investigated by deputy superintendent of police (DSP, city), Satnam Singh. The DSP, after taking the suggestions from district attorney , transferred the case to SSP, who instructed them to book the accused.”
