CHANDIGARH: In a major public announcement, Punjab chief minister (CM) Captain Amarinder Singh said that passenger planes will soon start operating from Halwara air force station. “We have received all requisite approvals from the defence and aviation ministry. The airport will soon be used for passenger travel,” said CM Amarinder Singh during an interaction with industrialists, councillors and government officials at a local hotel.

The CM also announced a package of ₹32 crore for the development of road, sewerage and other infrastructure at Focal Point in Ludhiana.

He said that because of his government’s efforts, the sick units in Mandi Gobindgarh were revived. “We are very firm against corruption and if someone is found indulging in malpractices, we will take strong action,” said the CM while exhorting the industrialists to bring more investment in Punjab.

The CM also said his government is going to set up 250 smart schools across the state. “One such smart school has been inaugurated today,” said the CM.

The CM also came down heavily on the deaths due to talcumpowder being mixed in drugs. “Heroin which was available for ₹1,200 a gram rose to ₹6,000 per gram and then just disappeared out of the market. So addicts started turning to other things. They started mixing the a drug used for neutralising the effect of drugs in medical clinics with talcum powder and injecting themselves. This instantly stops the person’s heart, killing them on the spot,” claimed CM Amarinder Singh.
