- Navrajdeep Singh

PATIALA:LESS than two weeks after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was accused of torturing and assaulting seven youths at the Sanaur police station, a video of cops led by the same official thrashing some men has surfaced.

The incident purportedly took place on the premises of the same police station, it is learnt. In the five-minute video uploaded on social media, ASI Narinder Singh and other policemen are seen overpowering a Sikh youth and then thrashing him badly.

Then the ASI is seen standing on the back of the youth and hitting him with a stick. The cops are also seen thrashing two other persons in the same video.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP rural) Gurdev Singh Dhaliwal said during initial probe, the video was found to have been shot at the Sanaur police station. “The ASI has been identified as Narinder Singh. A report on the matter will be sent to the SSP for further action,” said the DSP, who is also investigating officer in the previous case registered against the ASI.

Earlier, it was alleged that an inebriated ASI Narinder Singh stripped seven youths at the police station and resorted to third-degree torture. The victims had also alleged that the ASI asked them to cut hair from each other’s private parts.

One of the victims, Amardeep Singh, a baptised Sikh, was admitted to the Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, after

he fell unconscious. The incident took place on August 5 night when the ASI, along with a constable, had intercepted the youths, in their 20s, on their way to Patiala.

A case was registered against the ASI. Also, the Patiala deputy commissioner had ordered a magisterial probe into the matter, with the Punjab State Human Rights Commission seeking a report from the state home department. Sanaur SHO Gurinder Singh Bal is also facing departmental inquiry for his “casual approach” in handling the police station.
