Police inspector, sister stabbed to death by brother

AMRITSAR: Barely a week before Raksha Bandhan, a 37-year-old man allegedly stabbed his divorcee sister and brother, an inspector with Punjab Police, to death over a family dispute at their home, Diamond Avenue, Majitha Road during the intervenin­g night of Saturday and Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Chander Kumar, 45, and his younger sister Bindu, 42, while the accused is their younger brother, Deepak Kumar, 38.

The trio , with their mother, Usha Rani and Bindu’s five-yearold son had been living in Diamond Avenue for around a year.

Additional deputy commission­er of police (ADCP) City-2, Lakhbir Singh, said, we got informatio­n of the incident at around 12.30am.

Accompanie­d by station house officer (SHO), Sadar police station, Rajwinder Kaur, a police team reached the spot.

“The accused was arrested from the crime spot. The weapon (a dagger) used in the crime was also recovered from his possession,” said the ADCP.

While Chander was out for a walk, the accused stabbed his sister to death. When he returned home, Deepak hacked Chander to death, said police

A case under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC has been registered against the accused at Sadar police station and further probe is going on,said police.

Inspector Chander Kumar was last posted as SHO of Satnampura police station in Kapurthala, said police. An official of Kapurthala police said, Chander was suspended a few months ago due to a court case against him.

The inspector was also a divorcee. Chander’s ex-wife, Vandana, 37, who lives with her parents in Roop Nagar said, “We were married for over 12 years. Around two years ago, we had applied for divorce, but recently we decided to patch up.”

The couple has a daughter, who is studying in Class 7. She said, “Deepak was unemployed and uneducated. He wanted to marry a Chhiharta-based girl but Bindu and my husband opposed it. Deepak had been nursing a grudge against them , following which he killed them.”

During the incident, the trio’s mother was sleeping in an adjacent room with Bindu’s son.

On hearing the noise, she woke up and informed the neighbours, who later called the police, said police.

Accused stabbed Chander three times and Bindu twice, said police.the bodies have been sent to Amritsar civil hospital for postmortem.

“The accused will be presented in a local court on Monday,” she said.
