Three mobile phones recovered from Amritsar Central Jail

AMRITSAR: Twenty four hours after heroin and intoxicant­s was recovered, three mobile phones from inmates were seized, raising questions over the security arrangemen­ts of Amritsar Central Jail.

The mobile sets were recovered from three different prisoners inside the jail, here on Saturday.the accused are Gurjit Singh aka Lada of Dhand village in Tarn Taran district, Ghaniya Lal of Gurdaspur district and Parshotam Singh of Talwandi Bhagwan village in Amritsar.

Two cases have been registered at Islamabad police station against the accused.

The first case was registered on the complaint of jail superinten­dent Arashdeep Singh Gill.

During a surprise inspection, a smart phone was recovered from Gurjant’s possession while a black coloured mobile phone was seized from Ghaniya Lal.

The second case was registered on the complaint of assistant superinten­dent of the jail, Shamsher Singh.

Assistant sub inspector (ASI) Kuldip Singh of Islamabad police station said, “We have booked the accused under Sections 42, 52 A of the Prison Act. We will bring the accused on police remand for further investigat­ion.”

On 18 August, three prisoners were booked and a visitor was arrested after the Amritsar Central Jail authoritie­s recovered intoxicant­s, heroin and a mobile phone from their possession.

In mid July, Amritsar police had busted a heroin smuggling racket that was allegedly operating from Amritsar Central Jail, with the arrest of two brothers from Sultanwind road. The duo had told the police then their brother Raja who was lodged in the Amritsar jail used to give them directions for smuggling the heroin. They also told the police that Raja had been operating his network with the help of another prisoner, Pardeep Kumar aka Pindu, of Gujjarpura.
