HISAR: Celebrations broke out at Mayna village of pugilist Amit Panghal in Rohtak district on Saturday after he bagged the gold medal in 49kg boxing at the Asian Games in Jakarta defeating reigning Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan.

A wave of happiness spread among the family members and the villagers who were watching the match at a big screen installed under a tent outside Amit’s house.

The family members and the villagers danced on the beats of dhol-nagara as soon as the match ended with Amit emerging victorious in the bout. Women prepared laddoos at home which were distributed among all.

Talking to HT, his father Virender Singh, who is truck driver, said, “Going by the hard work Amit puts in his game, I have always been confident that he will one day bring laurels to the state and the country.”

He said, “Everyone in the village had expectations from him. The villagers had reached our house at 9.30am to watch thebout. Our house is small, so we put up a tent outside our house.”

“My wife Usha Rani has been trying to call up Amit since the match ended. But we are unable to reach him. Now we are waiting for his call,” he added.

Ajay Panghal, elder brother of Amit, said, “Amit’s next target will be to bring gold medal for India in the next Olympics.”
