Mobile phone seized from Amritsar jail after clash

AMRITSAR : Authoritie­s at the Amritsar Central Jail recovered a mobile phone after a clash broke out between prisoners on Friday. With this, in August alone, 24 mobile phones have been seized from the jail premises.

After the clash, a case under Sections 42, 52 and 52 A of the Prisons Act was registered against five jail inmates — Ravi Kumar of Harike in Tarn Taran; Bhupinder Singh of Pandori Warrainch village in Amritsar; Jaswinder Singh of Ganga Nagar in Rajasthan; Chiman Lal of Gurdaspur and Bau Barinder Singh of Patti in Tarn Taran — on Saturday.

The case was registered on the complaint of assistant superinten­dent of jail Joginder Singh, who said, “The accused had an old enmity with one Ranjit Singh of Gurdaspur, a jail inmate, due to which, the accused thrashed him. On Ranjit’s complaint, a physical search of the accused was launched on Friday evening and a mobile phone recovered from Ravi Kumar.”

Besides mobile phones, the authoritie­s have recovered a headphone, 690 intoxicate­d tablets, five-gram heroin and 18-gram intoxicate­d powder from jail inmates in August.

Out of the total mobile phones recovered, five were recovered from the visitors while 19 were seized from the inmates.

As per the cases registered in Islamabad police station of Amritsar, three mobile phones from three different jail inmates were seized in the first week of August during a routine search. Similarly, two mobile phones were recovered from two inmates in the second week of August.

In the third week, nine mobile phones, 690 intoxicate­d tablets and 18 gm intoxicate­d powder was recovered from 10 prisoners and a visitor in all. In the rest of the month, eight more mobile phones were recovered from two visitors and four jail inmates.

Amritsar jail superinten­dent Arshdeep Singh Gill said the jail staff was committed to wipe out this menace and all inputs were being taken seriously, resulting in the seizures.

In mid July, the Amritsar police busted a heroin smuggling racket that was allegedly operating from the Amritsar Central Jail, with the arrest of two brothers from Sultanwind road.

The duo had told the police then that their brother Raja, lodged in the Amritsar jail, used to give them directions for heroin smuggling.

They also told the police that Raja had been operating his network from the jail with the help of another prisoner, Pardeep Kumar aka Pindu, of Gujjarpura.
