JALANDHAR: The City police on Friday arrested two smugglers who tried to run over a police party near Wariana village here on Thursday night and seized 13 gm heroin from their possession.

The accused were coming from Kapurthala after purchasing drugs from a local dealer, police said.

Basti Bawa Khel station house officer (SHO) Gagandeep Singh sustained minor injuries as he tried to stop the vehicle of the accused.

Those arrested were identified as Pankaj and Rubi of Jalandhar. Two others have been identified as Simran and Prabh.

As per the information, a police party led by the SHO had set up a naka on the Jalandharkapurthala road and around 10pm, they signaled a Swift car (PB 08 DF 6756) to stop for checking.

Instead of stopping the car, the accused speeded up the vehicle. The SHO attempted to open the door but they fled from the spot and he sustained minor injuries on his arms, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Sarabjit Rai said.

The team, then, chased the car and nabbed one of accused Pankaj with the car on Thursday night and Rubi was arrested on Friday. Two remaining accused are absconding.

“We have recovered the heroin and the accused have confessed that they had purchased it from a dealer in Kapurthala to sell in Jalandhar,” the ACP said.

A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, has been registered against all four accused.
