BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS TO ENSURE SPEEDY, EFFECTIVE JUSTICE: CJ

SHIMLA : Himachal Pradesh high court’s new chief justice Surya Kant on Friday said the biggest challenge before the judiciary is to provide speedy and effective justice.

He was speaking at a function held in the high court in his honour after his swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhawan. He also inspected a guard of honor at the court premises.

“There should be a timeline in which every case should be decided and all stakeholde­rs should work in furtheranc­e of this cause,” he said.

Stressing the need for providing justice to the poor and needy, Justice Kant said the existence of the Bar and Bench would be meaningful only when they are able to wipe out the tears of the poor.

Referring to his comparison with cricketer Rahul Dravid by Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Krishna Murari, he said, “I would rather like to go (to court) as an opener daily and come out in the evening unhurt and not out.”

He was designated as senior advocate in March, 2001. He held the office of advocate general, Haryana, till his elevation as a permanent judge to the Punjab and Haryana high court on January 09, 2004.

He was nominated as a member of the National Legal Services Authority on February 23, 2007 for two consecutiv­e terms.
