JALANDHAR: Counter intelligence wing and Jalandhar rural police on Wednesday arrested two brothers after recovering 7.5 kilograms of opium concealed under bundles of iron bracelets from their car (Karha) at Goraya.

The accused were identified as Manpreet Singh, 29, and Kamaljeet Singh, 33, of Warpal village in Amritsar. They smuggled opium in the state after purchasing it from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

In a press release issued here, counter intelligence assistant inspector general of police HPS Khakh said the recovery was made after the accused in an international drug smuggling racket gave a tip-off during investigation.

The smuggling racket was involved in sending contraband to Canada through couriers by hiding it in big cooking woks (Kadhahi).

Police got information that the accused were in a white Santro Zing (PB02-BG-8677) on the GT Road (Phillaur-goraya) and were carrying huge quantity of opium hidden under bundles of iron bracelets, he said.

The counter intelligence team and Goraya police, then, set up a special naka on the Jalandhar-ludhiana highway.

“When the police stopped their car for checking, it was being driven by Manjit Singh and Kamaljeet was sitting in the adjoining seat. The police frisked the car and found opium weighing 7.5 kg,” Khakh said.

“The accused were running a small manufacturing unit of bracelets with their father, who expired in 2009,” he said.

“The duo, then, came in contact with truck drivers to make easy money and started smuggling drugs,” he added further .

A case has been registered under Sections 18 and 25/61/85 of the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances)act, at Goraya police station.
