Militant killed in J&K encounter, policeman shot dead by gunmen

AN UNIDENTIFI­ED GUNMEN FORCIBLY ENTERED HOUSE OF POLICE CONSTABLE JAVEED AHMAD AT WARPORA IN SOPORE AND SHOT HIM DEAD

SRINAGAR : A militant was killed and another injured in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, while unidentifi­ed gunmen shot dead a police constable in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Saturday.

Police and army late on Friday launched a cordon and search operation in Babogund village in Pulwama after the presence of militants in a house. In the morning, an encounter broke out in the area resulting in killing of one militant while two other militants escaped from the cordon.

However, one injured militant was brought to the SMHS Hospital in injured condition. Doctors said the condition of injured militant is critical.

Defence spokesman said one militant was killed in Pulwama operation. After the killing of militant, restrictio­ns were imposed in Pulwama and adjacent villages. The slain militant has been identified as Shabir Ahmad Dar of Samboora. Multiple funerals were held for the militant at his native village.

On Friday night, an unidentifi­ed gunmen forcibly entered the house of police constable Javeed Ahmad at Warpora in Sopore and fired volley of bullets on him. He was shifted to sub-district hospital where doctors declared him dead. The constable was associated with armed battalion of the police. Police blamed militants for the killing of constable and said case has been registered against the militants.

This year, so far, 38 policemen and SPOS have been killed by militants. Meanwhile, Kupwara observed shutdown for the third day against killing of PHD scholar-turned militant Manan Wani.
