PACKET SENT TO US CHANNEL BY BOMB SUSPECT INTERCEPTED

- Yashwant Raj

WASHINGTON: Another package mailed by pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc was discovered on Monday, hours before he was to be produced in a Florida court where he will be formally read the charges pressed against him.

The new package was addressed to CNN, the news network said. It was intercepted at an off-site mailing facility in Atlanta, Georgia, where the network is headquartered.

“This morning another suspicious package addressed to CNN was intercepted at an Atlanta post office," CNN CEO Jeff Zucker said in a statement.

“There is no imminent danger to the CNN Center. All mail, at all CNN domestic bureaux is being screened at off-site facilities as of last Wednesday, so this package would NOT have come directly to the CNN Center even if it hadn't been intercepted first. Our screening process is working and we will keep you updated as we learn more,” he added.

FBI is investigating the new package. Nobody has been hurt by these bombs, but the FBI has said they are not fake. They are all packaged in similar Manila envelopes lined on the inside by bubble wrap. The improvised explosive devices are PVC pipes, each with a small clock.

Sayoc, a former DJ and pizza delivery man, was arrested last Friday in Florida and charged with the mailing explosive devices to former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and other Democrats, officials and public figures such as actor Robert De Niro, George Soros and Tom Steyer.

Sayoc, 56, is an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump.
