ROHTAK: Barely three days after a 16-year-old girl was kidnapped and gangraped by four men in Rohtak, a woman was gangraped in a moving car on Rohtakjhajjar highway on Sunday evening by two men who offered her lift.

The victim, belonging to Jhajjar, had come to Rohtak to her relative’s house, police said.

She was to go back home in the evening and was waiting for a bus to Jhajjar. However, when no bus came for a long time, she accepted lift from two men in their car.

Such taxi service, though unauthorised, is very common in Rohtak and adjoining districts.

The police said the woman boarded the car only after taking and verifying the phone numbers of the two men. She sent the phone numbers to her family back home as well.

The victim alleged that soon after she boarded the car, the two men forcibly drugged her and then gangraped her.

She said they strangulated her when she tried to make noise to seek help. After raping her, they threw her on the road near Sampla highway and fled away.

The woman, with the help of some local residents, reached the police station and lodged a complaint.

Sampla police station SHO Kulbir said they have registered a case against the two men, identified as Sonu of Jhajjar and Raju of Bahadurgarh.

“Both the accused have been identified from the phone numbers that were taken by the victim before boarding their car. They have been booked for rape, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation. A hunt has been launched to nab them,” the SHO said.

The incident raises concern about the unauthorised taxis running in large number in the area.

Due to shortage of Haryana Roadways buses, several such taxis are plying from Rohtak to Delhi, Jhajjar and Gurugram.

Previously, too, several cases of such taxi drivers molesting and raping woman, and robbing passengers of valuables have come to light.
