THE DUO GAVE THE COMPANY’S EMPLOYEES A TIGHTLY WRAPPED BUNDLE THAT HAD A FEW US DOLLAR BILLS AND THE REST WAS WHITE PAPER

GURUGRAM:THE Gurugram police booked two persons on Saturday after they allegedly cheated a foreign currency exchange company in Delhi of ₹8 lakh.

According to police, the duo — a man and a woman — gave the company’s employees a bundle that had a few US dollar bills and the rest was white paper.

By the time the employees, who had gone to collect the money, realised they had been scammed, the accused had fled.

Hukkam Chand, an employee of the company located in Delhi’s Nehru Place, said that someone known to the company had contacted them on November 14 and said that a person named Akash in Gurugram had to exchange around $33,000.

“The next day we met Akash near a mall on MG Road and he took us to a park in Patel Nagar around 6pm,” Chand said.

Chand said that the man and the woman, who seemed to be around 18 years of age, came after a few minutes.

“Akash said that he knew the duo and had verified the bundle. We were reluctant, but then gave ₹8 lakh and they gave us the bundle which was wrapped in cloth and plastic,” he said.

“They had tied the bundle very tight and by the time we opened it and found that we had been cheated, they had fled from the park.”

Chand said when they showed Akash what was in the middle, he claimed that he did not know them personally and was not responsible for the fraud.

“It was dark and we could not find them anywhere.”

An FIR was registered at Civil Lines Police station under sections 420 (cheating) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on Friday based on a complaint by Chand.

“There is no close circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area and police are looking for CCTV cameras in neighbouring localities to identify the accused,” said assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Dalbir Singh, who is the investigating officer in the case.
