SANGRUR: A 32-year-old man committed suicide at Bardwal village of Dhuri subdivision on Thursday night after being allegedly harassed by his wife and in-laws, police said on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Singh. The police registered a case of abetment to suicide against his wife Jaswinder Kaur, 30, mother-in-law Amarjit Kaur and father-in-law Brishbhan Singh.

The case was registered following a complaint by victim’s father Mewa Singh at Dhuri sadar police station on Friday.

In his complaint, Mewa Singh, said his son was married to Jaswinder of Bhalwan village 14 years ago and the couple have two minor children. Jaswinder often used to quarrel with Ranjit. On October 18, she had a fight with her husband and left for her parents’ home in Bhalwan, he alleged.

“On November 11, my son went to his in-laws’ place, but his wife refused to come along with him. Her parents assaulted him and sought divorce,” Mewa alleged.

He added, “My son had brought his wife’s mobile SIM on his way back. When he used her SIM in his phone, he found some suspicious calls on her number. Since then my son was under depression and he hanged himself to death at his residence on Thursday.”

The three accused have been booked under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code.

“The police have registered a case and started investigations. No arrest has been made so far,” said Dhuri sadar SHO Gurbhajan Singh.
