AMRITSAR: Recovery of two cigarette packets from an inmate in Amritsar Central Jail on Friday has once again put a question mark on the working and security of the jail authorities.

Islamabad police booked Harpeeet Singh aka Nona of Chhiharta area in Amritsar, who has been lodged in the jail, under Section 42 of Prisons Act on Friday. A case was registered on the complaint of assistant superintendent of the jail Samsher Singh, who said he recovered two packet of cigarettes from Harpreet Singh during a surprise checking in the jail.

Assistant sub-inspector Bhupinder Singh of Islamabad police station said on the complaint of the assistant jail superintendent, a case was registered against the prisoner who will be interrogated during the police remand.

However, this is not the first recovery from the inmates this month. In November so far, the jail authorities have seized two mobile phones, 30 intoxicated tablets, and 25gm intoxicated substance, besides the recovery of 10 packets of cigarettes from the possession of 12 inmates.

On November 1, the jail authorities had arrested Manna Singh and a mobile phone was recovered from his possession. Similarly, on November 14, two other inmates were booked after a packet of cigarette and 30 intoxicated tablets were recovered from them.

As per the record of daily crime report of the police, on November 15, two inmates, Mani Dhawan and Anil Kumar, were booked after four packets of cigarettes were recovered from them. A day later, another prisoner Sukjit Singh was booked after he was caught with a packet of cigarettes and 15 mobile recharge coupons. On November 18, two inmates were caught with a packet of cigarettes each. While on November 20, an inmate was caught with 25gm of intoxicated substance and a mobile phone.

Jail superintendent, Arshdeep Singh Gill said, “When prisoners come back after being presented in courts, they hide banned items in their private parts. We conduct regular checks to stop such activities.”
