Truck rams into stationary bus in Khanna, 52 injured

MOHANPUR (KHANNA): As many as 52 employees of Ralson India Ltd survived with minor to serious injuries after the bus was hit by a truck on the GT Road near Mohanpur village in Khanna tehsil of Ludhiana district on Friday morning. Injuries of about 15 people were serious in nature.

The bus was waiting for some employees when the truck hit it from the rear. After being hit, the bus overturned. The 30-seater bus was carrying 52 passengers.

A number of passengers said that the truck driver admitted that he had fallen asleep. The truck also overturned. Both the bus and the truck were badly damaged.

“At around 7.10 am, I stopped the bus on roadside outside Mohanpur village to pick some employees when a speeding truck hit the bus from rear. The bus overturned and there was chaos,” said the bus driver, Bhinder Singh (50). Bhinder suffered injuries on his neck and left hand.

Other commuters and some passengers who had suffered minor injuries rescued others and the driver. They also alerted the officials of the company. The injured were taken to Civil Hospital in Khanna. Of the 52, around 35 were discharged after the first-aid, while the remaining were referred to Fortis Hospital and ESIC Hospital in Ludhiana.

The truck driver, Rakesh Kumar of Gurdaspur, who was transporti­ng iron pipes, was arrested by the Sadar (Khanna) police.

Khanna SHO inspector Gurmail Singh said the truck driver has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangerin­g life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
