JALANDHAR: Three days after a property dealer and his son were attacked with sharp-edged weapons at his office near city bus stand by at least eight miscreants, police on Friday arrested two accused in the case.

Contradicting the previous theory of property dispute, the case has turned to be a revengeseeking incident as the arrested accused told the police that they had attacked property dealer Shashi Sharma and his son Sunny Sharma to teach them a lesson to not interfere in their betting business.

Those arrested have been identified as Pardeep Kumar alias Deepa and Bikramjit Singh alias Nihang, both residents of Jalandhar.

While, six other accused, including main accused kingpin Dalbir Singh alias Beera and his five accomplices, identified as Amarjit Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Ranjit Singh, Rubi and Honey are absconding and yet to be arrested.

“It was an attack to teach Shashi a lesson as he was trying to overpower Beera‘s betting business and had reportedly demanded 30% share from him to allow him to do this business in the city,” a senior police officer said on request of anonymity.

He said Shashi had a criminal record and had been booked in several criminal cases, including attempt to murder and cheating, by the city police.

Deputy commissioner of police (Dcp-investigation) Gurmeet Singh said during the investigation it came to fore that Beera was involved in cricket betting business.

He had contacted the accused to execute the attack on Shashi, said the DCP.

He said, while addressing the press conference here, that arrested persons told the police that their intention was not to murder Shashi but just to frighten him off so that he won’t interfere in Beera’s business.

“The investigation is on and the remaining accused will be arrested soon,” DCP Gurmeet Singh said.

As per the information, Shashi Sharma and his son Sunny Sharma, who are members of a Hindu outfit and run property dealing business and travel company in the city, were attacked on Tuesday afternoon when they were sitting in their office.

They are undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Meanwhile, a case under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 307 (attempt to murder) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 25/27-54-59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused by the city police.
