Six killed, one injured as car, van collide head-on in Rewari village

GURUGRAM: Six men were killed and one severely injured on Sunday night after a driver lost control of his vehicle and it rammed into the divider on Rewari-mahendraga­rh Road near Saharanwas, around 70km from Gurugram. The vehicle broke the divider and collided with a van coming from the opposite direction.

The police said the driver of the car, a Maruti Ertiga, may have been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The deceased were identified as Rakesh Yadav (31), Billu Yadav (36), Bhopal Singh (35), Sher Singh (40), Surinder Singh (55), and Ajit Singh (33), the driver of the van. Rakesh, a lawyer, Billu, of Surkhpur village, and Bhopal were in the Ertiga and died on the spot.

They were on their way back from Kanina village in Mahendraga­rh, the police said.

Surinder, a farmer, was on his way back home after selling produce in Mahendraga­rh mandi, and was seated at the front of the hired pick-up van. Sher Singh, who had hitched a ride, was seated at the back. Ajit Singh died on Monday morning.

Rakesh’s family members said he, along with two friends, had gone to attend a wedding Sunday evening. “He was a lawyer practising in Rewari and Kosli. He is survived by a four-month-old daughter and wife, who live in Surkhpur village with his parents,” Ravinder Yadav, a family friend, said.

Yadav, and their eight-yearold son. His wife is the sarpanch of Surkhpur village.

Raj Singh, who was at the wheel of the Ertiga, sustained severe injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, the police said. The police have sent his blood samples to determine if he was inebriated while driving.

Passersby who witnessed the accident informed the police control room.

They told the police that the Ertiga seemed to be speeding and skidded for at least 50 metres after hitting the divider around 10:30pm. Mahipal Singh, head constable of Rampura police station and investigat­ing officer in the case, said passersby near the petrol pump rushed to the spot and helped take the victims to the hospital. “Our team rushed the injured to the nearest hospital where four persons were declared dead on arrival. We informed the families, who reached the hospital late on Sunday night.

Surinder Singh and Ajit Singh died on Monday morning, while undergoing treatment.

The bodies were handed over to the families on Monday, after the autopsy,” Vidhya Sagar, subinspect­or, Rampura police station, said.

A police officer privy to the investigat­ion said the extent of damage suggested that both vehicles were being driven at speeds higher than 100 km/hr.a case was registered under sections 304A, 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code against the driver of the Ertiga.
