- HT Correspondent

SRINAGAR : On International Human Rights Day, the separatists on Monday urged the international organisations to take note of the Kashmir issue and put pressure on New Delhi to stop the grave human rights violation as state repression goes from ‘bad to worse’.

In a letter to UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising - Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, put forth a request for establishment of a UN commission of inquiry to conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation into human rights violations in Kashmir AS as proposed by UNHR Commission.

Urging international organisations like world peace organizations, international community, Amnesty International Asia Watch, UNHRC and ICRC, the leadership, in a statement said, “We urge the international community , all nations respecting human rights and people of India to take a serious note of the unending and unabated cycle of human rights abuses being committed by the lakhs of Indian forces deployed across Kashmir past over three decades.”

“We have seen and continue to see the worst ever human rights violations as state repression goes from bad to worse with the increase in killings especially of youth to subvert the people movement. All political and religious rights of people are also suspended,” the statement read.

‘’While Universal Declaration of Human Rights continues to be the milestone for universal laws around the world, in Kashmir, political and human rights continue to be violated,’’ tweeted Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

SEPARATIST SHUTDOWN AFFECTS LIFE IN SRINAGAR

The JRL had called for a shutdown to highlight alleged human rights violations by the security forces. In Kashmir all shops and business establishments remained shut. Shops, public transport and other business establishments remained closed in old city and uptown areas in the city.

Authorities have deployed police and Central Reserve Police Force troopers in Srinagar’s old city area and other law and order sensitive places of the valley.

No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere so far.
