Murder bid: Armyman, among 10 booked for attacking Punjab police ASI, head constable

TARNTARAN: The district police on Monday booked ten people, including an armyman, for attacking an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a head constable, who stopped the accused for causing traffic jam at Cheema village in Patti sub-division, on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as armyman Ranjit Singh, 30, and his aides Sahib Singh, Sukhpal Singh, Amritpal Singh, Tasbir Singh, Gurjant Singh and Jobanjit Singh of Cheema Kalan village. However, the identity of three other accused is yet to be ascertaine­d.

The case has been registered on the complaint of ASI, Gurbaksh Singh, of Patti Sadar police station who stated: “On Sunday I got informatio­n that there has been a traffic jam in Cheema Kalan village. I, along with head constable Balbir Singh, reached the spot, where we found that the jam had occurred because a private bus was parked on the road by Ranjit Singh.”

“In order to open the jam, when we asked Ranjit to take the bus aside, he, along with the other accused, attacked us. They thrashed us with an intention to kill. I and Balbir Singh were injured in the incident and were taken to Patti civil hospital by the locals,” said the ASI.

As per the police, Ranjit Singh and his wife Bhinder Kaur were on their way from Patti to Cheema village in their Maruti Suzuki Alto car. When their car reached near Cheema village, it met with an accident with a private bus coming from the opposite side.

After the accident, Ranjit and his wife thrashed driver of the bus, Baljinder Singh of Amritsar, and made the bus driver park the bus on the road,which led to the traffic jam, said police.

Sadar police station house officer (SHO), Balkar Singh, said, “Ranjit is a serving army man and is absconding with his aides. We are conducting raids to arrest him.”

He said a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 333 (volnight, untarily causing grievous injury to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant), 186 (obstructin­g public servant in discharge of public functions), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecutio­n of common object), of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused at Sadar police station.

A separate case against Ranjit Singh and his wife Bhinder Kaur has also been registered on the complaint of the bus driver under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidati­on) of the IPC, the SHO said.
