Night temp dips in Kashmir, Himachal gets fresh snowfall

JAMMU/SHIMLA: Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh reeled under the grip of a piercing cold wave with most places recording the minimum temperatur­e below the freezing point on Tuesday.

Night temperatur­es dropped across all weather stations in Kashmir but stayed above the freezing point at most places even though the Valley witnessed snow and rains on Monday, Met officials said here.

Srinagar city recorded a low of 1.6 °C on Monday night officials said on Tuesday. They said Qazigund — the gateway town to the Valley — recorded a low of 1.6 °C, while nearby Kokernag town recorded a low of 0°C. Kupwara in north Kashmir saw the mercury settling at 0.2 °C, the officials said.

They said that the Pahalgam health resort, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, registered a low of minus 2 °C, a drop of 1.7 °C compared to previous night.

Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, saw the mercury dipping due to clear skies following the snowfall on Monday and recorded a minimum of − 7.6°C compared to the − 6°C a night before.

Gulmarg recorded the lowest temperatur­e in the Valley on Monday.leh town in Ladakh region recorded a minimum temperatur­e of − 6.2 °C, the officials said.

They said the mercury in the nearby Kargil town settled at a low of −7.3 °C. Meanwhile, cold wave further intensifie­d on Tuesday with mercury dipping down to minus in many regions of the state. The isolated areas in high regions experience­d rain and snowfall in the last 24 hours. Keylong district headquarte­rs of Lahaul Spiti recorded −5.1°C.

Kothi, a village located at the foothills of Rohtang Pass experience­d 15cm of snow, Kalpa a town of Kinnaur district received 9cm of snow and Gondla, a village 18km away from Keylong experience­d 2cm of snow. Manali and Reckong-peo experience­d 4mm rainfall,chamba received 3mm and Mandi received 2mm rainfall. Meanwhile, Shimla, Solan and Sirmour districts remained dry.

The mercury in Kinnaur district was at−5.1°c and in tourist destinatio­n Manali was −0.4°C. The temperatur­e Shimla was recorded 3.7°C. The Met office has not made any forecast for snowfall in Shimla.
