CHANDIGARH: Alleging that the elections to the five civic bodies in Haryana were unfair, the main opposition party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Wednesday also questioned the integrity of the electronic voting machines (EVMS).

“It is the victory of EVMS and not the BJP,” alleged INLD leader Abhay Chautala, adding that the BJP had run away from Yamunanagar civic body polls and had been openly admitting they were at number 3 there.

“How can the BJP win there,” he asked and alleged that at a particular booth in Yamunanagar an EVM machine counted 700 votes whereas the total votes polled there were about 600.

Abhay further accused chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar of playing the caste card in the election while one of his cabinet ministers openly offered money and guns to voters. Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had canvassed for mayoral

candidates, also called the poll results unfair. Questioning the EVMS’ functioning, he held that how could the BJP win all five mayoral elections while badly losing majority of the corporators’ seats at the same time.

“Moreover, it is wrong to say the Congress lost in the said polls as it had not contested these elec- tions. Also, there were several candidates supported by one Congress leader or the other contesting against each other at several places. I had also campaigned for some of them on the request of local party workers. They were not Congress’ candidates,” he added.
