Sub-inspector found dead in Jandiala
AMRITSAR: A Punjab police sub-inspector (SI) was found shot dead at Jandiala Town police post, 15 km from the district headquarters, on Wednesday morning.
SI Satinder Pal Singh, 50, had been posted as the in-charge of the police post three months ago. Police suspect that the SI’S death was the result of an accidental firing from his service revolver.
As per the police, Satinder Pal went into a room of the police station to sleep on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, when other police personnels of the police post went to wake him up, they found the room locked from inside. They got no response when they knocked the door. They then broke open the door and found Satinder Pal dead with a bullet injury to his head.
Soon after learning about the incident, senior superintendent of police (Ssp-rural), Parampal Singh, along with other officials reached the spot and initiated investigation. The SSP said, “As per our preliminary investigation, the SI might have died due to accidental fire from his service revolver. He was a very courageous man and cannot have committed suicide.”
There were many other policemen in the police post in the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday, but no one heard the gun shot ring.
The SI, a resident of Ajnala in Amritsar, is survived by his mother Gurmeet Kaur, wife Balwinder Kaur and two sons.
SHO, Rajbir Singh, said, “After the postmortem, the SI’S body was handed over to his family.” His cremation was held in Ajnala town on Wednesday evening. NEW YORK: A man in the US has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for brutally attacking a 53-year-old Indian-origin Sikh taxi driver in Seattle last year.
Swarn Singh was assaulted with a deadly weapon by Rory Benson in December 2017, according to Sikhs civil rights group, The Sikh Coalition.
Benson, who pleaded guilty to assaulting him, was sentenced to 15 months in prison by a court in Seattle on Friday.
Singh, who maintains Sikh articles of faith, including unshorn hair and a turban, had parked outside an apartment building to drop off Benson and his mother.
Benson, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, attempted to suffocate him with a piece of cloth kept in the taxi to wipe the windshield, the coalition said in a statement.
He immediately ran out of the taxi, and Benson grabbed a hammer from his bag, chasing him on foot. Benson hit Singh in the head repeatedly, specifically targeting his turban and knocking it to the ground, it said.
He suffered a scalp laceration and a skull fracture as a result of the attack and was rushed to hospital. Benson was arrested.
The Sikh Coalition said it worked with Singh for 11 months to make sure the Bellevue police department and the King County prosecuting attorney’s office were properly investigating the incident and reviewing appropriate charges.
Singh submitted an impact statement to the King County superior court, urging his attacker to recognise the damage caused, detailing his injuries and the impact of the assault on the Sikh community.
