SANGRUR: Four days after the death of a 27-year-old state-level kabaddi player, Balkar Singh, of suspected drug overdose at Rupa Heri village, a Dhuri woman was arrested for supplying ‘chitta’, a variant of heroin, to the victim. Sangrur police had booked the woman under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian penal code on Friday.

The police arrested the woman, Bhuri (she goes by first name only), from her house in Dhuri and allegedly recovered more drugs during search.

“After booking her, Sangrur police along with Dhuri police raided her house on Friday. The police also recovered 200 gram ‘chitta’ from her house during search. The Dhuri police registered a separate case against her under sections 21/61/85 of the NDPS act,” Dhuri SHO Major Singh said.

The Sangrur police had registered a case on the complaint of Balkar’s friend Dalvir Singh alias Dara of Ubhawal. The FIR states that Balkar purchased ‘chitta’ from Bhuri and injected the drug at his house at around 8.30pm.

“He injected ‘chitta’ before my eyes but thereafter when he started frothing, I called up his father. Balkar died soon after,” Dalvir Singh said in his complaint.

The victim, Balkar Singh, who had been living in Chandigarh for a couple of years, had reportedly come to his parental village ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections in the state. He was also undergoing treatment at a drug de-addiction centre.
