GURUGRAM: A 25-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl were killed, while four members of a family were injured, three critically, on Sunday, when an SUV they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck in Nuh, around 67 kilometres from Gurugram.

The deceased and the injured are family members of Rakhbar Khan, who was allegedly lynched by a mob of cow vigilantes in July this year.

Those killed in Sunday’s accident were identified as Salim Khan, a distant relative of Rakhbar and a resident of Saimirbaas village, and Sanjida, Rakhbar’s niece and a resident of Tapkan village.

The four injured were identified as Rakhbar’s wife Asmeena, 31, two daughters— Sahida, 11, and Mansab, 1,—and sister-in-law Umrabi, 35.

The family was on its way to Aligarh to meet Rakhbar’s sons, who are studying at a madarsa run by Salma Ansari, wife of former vice-president of India Hamid Ansari.

Satish Kumar, general secretary of Al Noor Charitable Society, which runs the madrasa, said,“we have not informed the children about the accident as yet,” Kumar said.

The police said the accident took place between Mandi Khera and Badkali Chowk, when a rashly driven and speeding Mahindra Scorpio collided with the truck. The police said the SUV was being driven at 100 kmph. The police suspect that the car’s driver may have lost control of the vehicle, which reportedly took a sharp right turn before hitting the truck near Badali Chowk around 6.40 am.

The police said that at the time of the accident there was dense fog on the road and visibility was reduced to a few metres.

Investigation officer(io) Sunder Singh of the Nagina police station, Nuh, said the exact sequence of events that led to the mishap could not be ascertained as there were no eyewitnesses and the injured were unfit to give statements.

“The impact of the crash was such that the car’s driver and Khan’s family members got stuck between the seats and the dashboard. It took passersby around 15 minutes to rescue the injured using iron cutters,” IO Singh said.

Nuh superintendent of police Rajesh Duggal said the causalities would have been higher had there been a delay in rescue operations.

“An analysis of the accident spot suggests the SUV driver could not see the truck coming from opposite direction and collided with it head on. The injured were first rushed to a local hospital from where they were shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre,” Duggal said, adding that the police patrol team reached the accident spot within minutes.

Dr Nihaal Singh Solanki, district hospital Al-afia, Mandikhera, Nuh, said the six injured, five of whom were severely hurt, were brought to the hospital around 7.30 am. The driver was shifted to a private hospital in Faridabad, where he died, and the rest were shifted to Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, Nalhar, Nuh.

“Only one child got away with bruises, the rest are severely injured. The women have multiple fractures and ribs are also fractured,” Solanki said, adding that Asmeena suffered critical injury to the spine.

The police said the truck driver managed to escape, but his vehicle was seized. The truck belongs to a Rohtak-based transporter. A case was lodged against the truck driver under IPC sections 279 and 304A at the Nagina police station.
