Shah: Assembly proceedings salt on wounds for ’84 victims

Targets AAP govt over row regarding resolution on anti-sikh riots

NEWDELHI: BJP national president Amit Shah on Sunday said the row over a resolution on the 1984 anti-sikh riots in the Delhi assembly was akin to “rubbing salt on the wounds of the victims”.

Last week, during a special session of the Delhi Assembly, legislators moved a resolution on the 1984 anti-sikh riots. The resolution was embroiled in a controversy after a legislator allegedly added hand-written amendments to the resolution seeking seeking the withdrawal of the country’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, awarded to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Speaker Ram Niwas Goel later said the portion in the resolution about withdrawal of award was moved but not passed.

“What has happened in the Assembly was like rubbing salt on the wounds of the anti-sikh riot victims by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). It is a shame. It has exposed the double-faced character of the AAP,” Shah said, addressing his party’s booth level in-charges at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Shah said the Sikh victims were denied justice for so many years because the “the perpetrators of the riots were also the protectors”.

In his 27-minute speech, Shah asked them to go door to door and convey the good works done by the central government. He also criticised the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party on different issues.

AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj, in response, said BJP MPS must answer why they did not stop the Metro fare rise or address the sealing issue.

“They could have brought an ordinance to immediately stop sealing but they did nothing. The Central government’s contribution for Delhi was to stall all public welfare schemes in Delhi,” he said. “They stalled Mohalla Clinics, they created problems in CCTV project, they stopped home delivery of ration, they created hurdles in door step delivery of services. Let people compare their work with work of Delhi government in education, health, water, power and other schemes for the people of Delhi.”
