JALANDHAR:THE Congress workers on Sunday showed black flags to the BJP state unit president Shwait Malik , who was in the city on Sunday to hold a meeting with party representatives ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Gurdaspur on January 3.

Malik had to witness Congress workers’ protest outside the hotel where he was delegating the meeting of the party representatives of Amritsar, Jalandhar and Phagwara.

Addressing party representatives, Malik said PM Modi has a deep regard for Punjabis, which is why he decided to start the party’s campaign for the next year from the state. “PM will land in Gurdaspur at 10.30am on January 3. To express our gratitude for all he has done for the state, including giving approval to Kartarpur Corridor and setting up the SIT in 2017 due to which Congress Sajjan Kumar received life imprisonment in 1984 riot case, we all should participate in the rally in large numbers,” said Malik.

The protesting Congress workers raised slogans against the BJP central government for “failing” to fulfil any of its promises in the last five years.

‘CONG SUPPORTERS WANTED TO ATTACK ME’

Shwait Malik alleged that some Congress supporters, who had tried to “disrupt” his meeting in Jalandhar on Sunday, wanted to attack him.

The Rajya Sabha MP told reporters that some Congress supporters had come to the venue of the meeting “with an ulterior motive”. “The Congress goons had come with a motive to disrupt the meet and assault me, but the BJP workers foiled their nefarious bid,” he claimed.

Some Congress supporters claimed that a group of party’s youth leaders were peacefully protesting near the meeting venue when some saffron party supporters pushed them and threw their party flag .

The charge was denied by BJP leaders here.
