They (Akalis) are well aware that the Gandhis were never named in the 1984 riots, yet they continued to drag the family into the case. AMARINDER SINGH, chief minister

CHANDIGARH: Strongly condemning the defacing of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s statue in Ludhiana, chief minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday asked Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Badal to stop indulging in petty politics and apologize for the obnoxious act of his party workers.

Such acts will backfire on his party in the coming Lok Sabha elections, the CM warned Sukhbir. “Indulgence in such petty and condemnable actions will not absolve you or your family of the many sins of omission and commission against the Guru Granth Sahib and the Sikh community,” Amarinder said in a statement.

Lashing out at the Akalis, Amarinder said “in their desperation to win public support, which the SAD had completely lost due to its criminal acts of commission and omission in the 10 years of SAD-BJP rule, the Badals and their supporters are stooping to abominable low”.

“They are well aware of the fact that the Gandhis were never named or implicated in the riots, yet they continue to drag the family into the case,” said the Chief Minister.

A HEINOUS ACT: JAKHAR

Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar condemned the incident of blackening the statue and demanded that the SAD president should tender apology for this heinous act of his party workers.

In a press release, jakhar said that after losing public support, the Akali Dal leaders are indulging in such cheap politics which the people of the state do not like.
