SAD leader held with 300 bottles of ‘illicit liquor’

POLICE HAVE CLAIMED THAT THERE HAS BEEN A SPURT IN LIQUOR SMUGGLING IN THE WAKE OF PANCHAYAT POLLS ON DEC 30

SANGRUR : A leader of Shiromani Akali Dal and former chairman of block Samiti Lehragaga was arrested for allegedly carrying illicit liquor from Haryana on Monday late evening.

The accused has been identified as Gurdeep Singh of Kotra Lehal near Lehragaga. The police said a car, bearing registrati­on number (PB 13AW 0511), was stopped at a checkpost and during search 300 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered.

“The car was being driven by Gurdeep Singh. He has been arrested,” said Moonak deputy superinten­dent of police Ajaypal Singh.

“The liquor was being smuggled from Jakhal in Haryana,” said Gulzar Singh, in-charge Zail police post.

A case has been registered under section 61, 78/1/14 of the excise act at the Lehra police station.

MAN HELD WITH 2,800 BOTTLES OF SMUGGLED LIQUOR IN BATHINDA

BATHINDA : Police have arrested Amritpal Singh of Rori Kapura village, about 32km from Faridkot, with 236 boxes (2,832 bottles) of country-made liquor smuggled from Haryana.

A team from the Crime Investigat­ion Wing (CIA) wing arrested him while he was transporti­ng the liquor consignmen­t in a Tempo bearing fake registrati­on number from Haryana.

Two of his accomplice­s, Nikka Ram of Jaitu and Kaka Singh of Hari Nau village in Faridkot, who were travelling in a separate car ahead of the Tempo, are yet to be arrested.

Bathinda district has seen an increase in cases of smuggling of liquor from Haryana due to it being cheaper in that state.

Police have claimed that there has been a spurt in smuggling over the past week due to the panchayat elections on December 30.

Just last Wednesday (December 18), police had recovered 590 boxes of smuggled liquor. Bathinda SSP Nanak Singh said police had stepped up vigilance due to the panchayat polls.

4 HELD FOR CARRYING ILLICIT LIQUOR IN MOGA

MOGA: Police have booked five men in separate cases for carrying liquor and seized 74 bottles from them. Of these, 40 bottles were recovered from Charanjit Singh, of Sherpur Taiban village, during patrolling, said constable Sukhdev Singh.

The other accused are Sunil Kumar, alias Kalu, of Sherpur Taiban village; Gurmeet Singh of Boge Wala village; and Nirvair Singh and Balwinder Singh of Kadahi Wala village.

Investigat­ion officer constable Veer Singh of Fategarh Panjtoor police station said 34 bottles were seized from Sunil, Gurmeet, Nirvair and Balwinder. “Of these four accused, three were arrested, while Nirvair fled from the spot,” he added.

A case under sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act was registered against them at Fatehgarh Panjtoor and Dharamkot police station.
