NEWDELHI:THE police have busted a gang of burglars who broke into homes across Delhi so frequently that they were able to buy a Mahindra Scorpio SUV with the looted money.

Eight members of the gang, including a 23-year-old dancer featuring in several videos on Youtube, have been arrested, Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (south-east), said on Thursday.

The dancer, Arun Kumar, also works for a dance company and performs at public functions, the officer said.

Stolen jewellery worth ₹9 lakh have been recovered from them.

The gang’s alleged leader, 30-year-old Deepak, wouldn’t be a part of the burglary and would instead visit the crime spot later to ensure no evidence or CCTV footage was left behind.

But as luck would have it, his own visuals caught on CCTV from the latest crime spot gave him away, Biswal said.

“We were scanning footage from 30 CCTV cameras while investigating a burglary in Jangpura on Sunday when we spotted two suspicious-looking men on a motorcycle,” said Biswal.

“They turned out to be the mastermind Deepak and dancer Kumar. We arrested them from Bhalswa Dairy on Wednesday. At their instance, we nabbed the other six suspects just as they were about to flee in a Scorpio SUV from the same neighbourhood,” said the DCP.

The officer said the gang recently bought the SUV with money they got after stealing jewellery from a south Delhi home.

Three members of the gang had 28, 26 and 22 cases of burglaries registered against them, the officer said.

Some burglaries were reported from south Delhi neighbourhoods.

Police said the gang never used their personal mobile phones while committing the crimes.
