SRINAGAR : Some unidentified men, suspected to be militants, decamped with four AK-47 rifles from the official residence of Congress member of legislative council (MLC) Mohammad Muzuffar Parray at Jawahar Nagar locality, here on Saturday.

Official sources said the rifles have gone missing from the guard room of the legislator’s official residence at J-13, government quarters, Jawahar Nagar. Sources said that one of the personal security officer (PSO) had told senior officials that unidentified gunmen came to the residence and took away the weapons after he was overpowered by them.

“We are looking into all the angles as to how these weapons went missing,” Srinagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Imtiaz Ismail Parray said.

The official sources said that all the four policemen, three from security wing and another from Sopore district police posted at the MLC’S residence, have been summoned for questioning while the authorities have ordered an enquiry into the matter. The MLC said that he is in Jammu from past one month along with his family.

“I was informed by police about the incident. I don’t know how security officials could be so irresponsible. They have put our lives at risk by sending guards who are so irresponsible,” the MLC said.

Recalling the horror, Parray said he was forced to leave his house in Sopore three decades ago and had to face the wrath of militants who burnt his 10,000 apple boxes for being associated with the mainstream politics.

“The police should first do proper verification of their employees and then send them for guarding the legislators and other leaders,” he said.

Police have filed a case and an alert has been sounded in Srinagar to nab the suspects.
