76% clear exam in Kashmir, slain scribe Bukhari’s son scores 95%

SRINAGAR:THE results of Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) Class 10 board examinatio­ns were declared on Saturday night with Kashmir recording 76% pass percentage.

Slain journalist Syed Shujaat Bukhari’s son Tamheed scored 95% marks, while 14-year-old Noman Ashraf, who was killed during a firing by the security forces last month, secured 284 marks.

Despite witnessing frequent shutdowns, encounters, cordon and search operations, Pulwama and Shopian districts of South Kashmir had the highest pass percentage in Kashmir. While the students of Pulwama secured 84% pass percentage, Shopian had 83% pass percentage.

Chairperso­n, J&K Board of School Education, Veena Pandita, said the results were good compared to the past year. She said, “The overall pass percentage has increased from 62.94% to 75.44% this year. A total of 55,472 students had appeared in the examinatio­n out of which 41,846 have passed. The pass percentage of boys is 76.41% which is marginally more than the pass percentage of girls which is 74.40%.’’

The government schools also showed remarkable results in the examinatio­ns with 17.01% increase this time. Last year, the pass percentage of government schools was 46.70%, whereas, this year it is 63.71%.

Speaking about Tamheed, his cousin Shoaib, said, “Had his father been alive today, it would have been the happiest moment of his life as he was concerned about the studies of his children.”

Bukhari was killed by militants in June. Noman Ashraf from Balsoo, along with six militants, was killed during a protest in Batigund-kaprin, Shopian last month. Ashraf’s family couldn’t celebrate his success as he laid buried in a nearby graveyard.
