Newly elected sarpanch booked for assaulting Akali worker

AMRITSAR: Newly elected sarpanch of Jharunanga­l village, about 35km from the district headquarte­rs, Sahib Singh, has been among 10 people booked for assaulting a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) worker and his nephew.

They are also accused of firing 3-4 gunshots in the air, before leaving.

Congress-backed Sahib had won the election by 125 votes against Sad-backed Jaswinder Singh. The village has around 500 votes. The assault happened on Sunday, the day of the panchayat polls result, when inebriated by victory, the sarpanch and his group of aides forcibly entered the house of the victim, also the complainan­t, Jaimal Singh, 55 in the village. The second accused is Jagroop Singh, and eight others remain unidentifi­ed. All are absconding.

“At around 8pm on Sunday, Sahib Singh, his close aide Jagroop Singh, and around eight unidentifi­ed men forced their way to my house and started thrashing me with sticks,” Jaimal claimed, adding that his nephew Dalbir Singh, who stays in the neighbourh­ood was also thrashed when he came to intervene.

“Dalbir and I were injured in the legs and arms,” he claimed, adding that before leaving the accused fired 3-4 shots in the air to intimidate. Jaimal added, “I was supporting Jaswinder against Sahib and this became the cause of the assault.”

ASI Jasbir Singh said, “After winning the election, newly elected Congress sarpanch, along with his 10-odd aides resorted to hooliganis­m in Jaimal Singh’s house. They even broke doors and windowpane­s of Jaimal’s house.”

A case has been registered under sections 323 (punishment for voluntaril­y causing hurt), 452 (house-trespass after preparatio­n for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of ₹50), 336 (act endangerin­g life or personal safety of others), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecutio­n of common object) of the IPC and 25-54-59 of the Arms Act at the Khalchian police station.
