Phoolka to float non-political body, won’t contest Lok Sabha elections

NEWDELHI: A day after resigning from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), senior advocate and anti- Sikh riots petitioner Harvinder Singh Phoolka on Friday announced that he will float a non-political organisation of social workers based out of Punjab.

Addressing the media here, he said after being in politics for five years he feels that the decision of converting the parallel movement started by social worker Anna Hazare into a political party was not correct. “It was a powerful movement. So much so that those in power were forced to listen to what the movement was demanding. No political party could have ignored what it was saying,” he told the media.

Phoolka also ruled out contesting the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“I will not contest Lok Sabha polls although after the conviction of Sajjan Kumar, people in Punjab said I could easily win from any seat,” he said. Phoolka has been fighting the legal battle for the 1984 riots victims.

Congress leader Jindal was last month convicted in a riot case. Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Jagdish Tytler are yet to be brought to book and this battle will be fought through a common platform, the former AAP leader said.

Without naming the Shiromani Akali Dal or Badals, Phoolka appealed to the Sikh community to free the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) from the control of a political party.

Phoolka said his non-political organisation would work on social causes. “I will begin from Punjab and address the drugs problem. There are several others who had joined AAP and have left. They and others, including lawyers, doctors, need to unite to form such organisations, which will be parallel to political parties,” he said.
