ROHTAK:THE Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) state president Pradeep Deswal was allegedly shot and beaten up outside the law department of the Maharshi Dayanand University on Friday, police said. Deswal was with his brother Anil Deswal when his car was allegedly attacked by 20-25 unidentified men. His brother was also roughed up and miscreants also snatched his licensed revolver.

Deswal was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) where he was admitted at the trauma centre. While Deswal’s aides said he was shot at in the arm, police till late evening did not confirm it.

“A medical report is awaited, after which we will be able to confirm anything. He has got injuries on his head,” inspector Garima said. While police said they were yet to identify the accused and were taking statements to register a case, Deswal’s brother blamed Congress’ student wing the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) for the attack.

He said a group of 20-25 men attacked them with lathis and shot at Pradeep. He said their car was also vandalised. He said he identified two to three attackers and will name them to police.

Deswal had recently sidelined himself from INSO’S parent organisation the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) to join Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party. Reacting on the attack, the JJP slammed law and order in the state and demanded arrest of the accused. “Assailants were close to former chief minister who is scared of JJP’S rising popularity in Haryana,” said INSO national president Digvijay Chautala. Digvijay’s father Ajay Chautala, who is out on parole, visited Deswal at PGIMS and said there was a “goonda raj” in the state that fortified campus of a university.
