State to conduct survey to assess competency level of students on Jan 18
LUDHIANA: After poor show in the National Achievement Survey conducted by the Union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) to assess competency levels of students in elementary classes, the Punjab education department will conduct its own survey to improve the state’s ranking at the national level.
Punjab was ranked 29th in the National Achievement Survey conducted in 2017.
The survey — State Learning Achievement Survey — will be conducted for the students of classes 2, 4 and 7 (who will be promoted to classes 3, 5 and 8 after their final examinations in Feb-march) on January 18 in all government schools across the state. This step has been taken after the MHRD decided to conduct the National Achievement Survey again this year. The last national survey reported poor performance by students of classes 5 and 8 in mathematics.
The students of classes 2 and 4 will be assessed on language, mathematics and environmental studies while students of class 7 will be assessed on science and social studies besides language and mathematics.
Director public instructions (elementary) and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) director Inderjit Singh said: “The aim is to prepare students for the national survey exam. By conducting the state survey, we can check the learning levels of the students. By this way, teachers can be further instructed to make efforts and clarify the doubts of students. The main purpose is to improve the state rank in the National Achievement Survey.”
As per the national survey, the numbers for class 8 were worse. Only 12% of the 24,920 students could answer more than half the math questions meant for class-appropriate competencies correctly. Gurdaspur, Ferozepur and Amritsar fared better than others. Muktsar, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala did worst. In Barnala, Bathinda and Mohali, 60% students could not answer even 30% of the questions.
As many as 24,046 children of class 5, who took the test in selected schools in all districts of the state, 37% could answer more than half the questions of their class. Ferozepur, Gurdaspur and Sangrur emerged as best districts, where the number of such students was over 50%. Bathinda, Barnala and Muktsar were at the bottom. In Bathinda, half the 1,546 students assessed could not answer even 30% of questions.
It was also reported that
82% children could understand what teacher say in the classroom. The survey further revealed that 89% children in class 3, 91% in class 5 and 92% children in class 8 like to come to school. As many as 25% students in class 3, 24% in class 5 and 29% in class 8 find difficult to travel.
SURVEY WILL BE CONDUCTED FOR THE STUDENTS OF CLASSES 2, 4 AND 7 WHO WILL BE PROMOTED AFTER THEIR FINAL EXAM
