9 schoolchil­dren injured as auto-rickshaw collides with recovery van in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: Ten people, including nine children, were injured when an auto-rickshaw they were travelling in collided with a recovery van from its backside at Manawala village on the Amritsar-jalandhar National Highway-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The injured have been identified as Navraj Singh (5), Gurpreet Singh (3), Simranjit Kaur (11), Jashanpree­t Kaur (14), Manpreet Kaur (5), Amanpreet Singh (4), Onkar Singh (9), Arman (4) and Manreet Kaur (6), and auto-rickshaw driver Gopi.

Police said, the incident took place at around 2pm when the students of Golden City School in Manawala, were returning home in the auto-rickshaw.

Senior superinten­dent of police (Ssp-rural), Parampal Singh, said the recovery van (PB-46-M-0717)’S driver Amritpal Singh had parked his vehicle on the road and was purchasing guavas from a road side stall near the Best Price on the Amritsar-jalandhar national highway when the accident took place. The recovery van driver fled from the spot after the mishap.

“The auto-rickshaw hit at the backside of the recovery van and nine children were injured in the mishap,” he said.

Soon after the accident, the passersby rescued the injured and rushed them to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in the district.

The SSP said three of the nine children were discharged immediatel­y after getting the first aid, while five children were discharged late in the evening. “One children is still in the hospital whose condition is also stated to be out of danger,” he added.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jugraj Singh of Daburji police post said, “We are taking statements of the injured and a case will be registered against the driver of the recovery van.”
