Senior manager of UCO Bank found dead in Shimla hotel

SHIMLA : A 54-year-old man was found dead in mysterious circumstan­ces in a room of a private hotel in Shimla district’s Rohru town on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Subhash Chand, a resident of Alwar in Rajasthan. Chand was working as a senior manager in UCO Bank at Chandigarh branch. According to the police, the victim had come for an audit in Summerkot branch of the bank on Wednesday.

“The victim was found dead by another bank employee who had gone to the hotel looking for him after he failed to reach the meeting on the scheduled time. Shubash was found dead on the bed by hotel employees and the bank manager,” police said.

“Post inspection, we recovered few homeopethi­c medicines from the room. It was learnt that the victim was a diabetic patient,” police said. Prima facie no evidence of foul play was found, they added.

Police have initiated inquest proceeding under Section 174 of Code Of Criminal Procedure.

Meanwhile, a 45-year-old priest allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun at Dhartidhar area of Sirmaur

district in Paonta Sahib on Wednesday. The victim Prem Chand was a resident of Swada Nadasi,sirmaur. The cause of death is yet to be ascertaine­d and an inquiry has been initiated.

In view of the forecast, Khurshid A Ganai, adviser to governor, along with chief secretary B V R Subrahmany­am arrived at the winter secretaria­t on Tuesday to review the state preparedne­ss.

Ganai raised the issue of delay in snow clearance from roads and by-lanes in certain pockets of the Valley and directed the divisional administra­tion to ensure timely action. He also urged the administra­tion to ensure that along with the urban centers, life in far flung areas does not get disrupted by the wet weather, a government spokesman said in a statement.

Chief secretary Subrahmany­am urged the deputy commission­ers to access the funds admissible under The State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for restoratio­n of water supply schemes, power and road infrastruc­ture, as per requiremen­t.

Stock position with regard to essential items including LPG, rice, sugar, kerosene oil and other fuels was reviewed extensivel­y, the spokesman said.

Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘Chillai-kalan’ – a 40-day harshest period of winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum and the temperatur­e drops considerab­ly.
