Rafale review pleas in SC on Feb 26

- HT Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will on Tuesday, February 26, take up review petitions filed by former Union ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie and advocate Prashant Bhushan, seeking a relook at its December 14 verdict that dismissed a bunch of pleas for a court-mandated investigation of the ~59,000-crore Rafale jet fighter deal. The fate of the review petitions will be decided by chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, justice S K Kaul and justice K M Joseph while sitting in chambers.the three judges will also decide if the review petitions should be heard in an open courtroom or not.

A plea for an open court hearing has been made by the petitioners, who have called for the initiation of contempt proceedings against persons who were responsible for allegedly “misleading” the court on sharing the price of the fighter jet. A review of the judgment has been sought on grounds that the government misled the court and tried to hide information from it. On Thursday, the CJI had agreed to look into a request for an early hearing of the pleas.cji Gogoi, however, refused to give a specific date for a hearing, saying that an appropriate bench of the Supreme Court is yet to be constituted on the matter. India and France signed a deal in 2016, replacing one that was being negotiated during the previous UPA regime, for the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets.
