Oppn, ruling MLAS spar over Jat violence

- HT Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The opposition and treasury benches in Haryana assembly sparred over the violence that broke out in February 2016 during the Jat quota agitation.

The arguments started when BJP MLA Aseem Goel praised the state government for maintaining the law and order in the state. Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal interrupted the BJP MLA, asking him who was responsible for the quota violence. This set off heated exchanges between the two sides.

Goel targeted former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda saying that the people of Rohtak have shown the mirror to Hooda. Goel was referring to the loss suffered by the mayoral candidate supported by the Congress during the civic body polls in Rohtak.

Earlier during the zero hour, the opposition and treasury benches entered into a round of heated arguments over the exclusion of certain paramilitary and army personnel, who died in the line of duty, from the list of martyrs entitled for financial support from the government.

To this Abhimanyu said, “I being a soldier myself, am conscious of the pain and suffering of martyrs unlike people like you who only play politics.”

Leader of the opposition Abhay Chautala said Karamvir, a BSF personnel from Panipat who was killed in action, was not given any financial support by the state government as he did not qualify as a martyr being a paramilitary personnel. Hooda said he himself visited the home of the slain BSF personnel and was told that the government would scrutinise his eligibility.

Abhimanyu said the government has provided 273 jobs to the next of kin of martyrs in the last four-and-a-half years. Even third generation of martyrs of Indopak war of 1971 were provided jobs, he said. “When we can make such an effort of identifying the kin of these martyrs, we will surely comfort and give support to anyone left out,” he assured the House.
