THE TIFF STARTED WHEN THE ENGLISH TEACHER ALLEGEDLY THRASHED THE STUDENT FOR PLAYING TRUANT

LUDHIANA: Two persons were injured in a clash outside a government senior secondary school at Gag Kalan village of Sidhwan Bet in Ludhiana on Tuesday following a tiff between a teacher and a student of Class 12.

The teacher and the student allegedly called their supporters outside the school. A gunshot was also fired injuring one person, police said.

The tiff started when English teacher Jasvir Singh allegedly thrashed the student for being absent.

Police said when the matter was being discussed at the panchayat-level on the school premises, supporters of the teacher and the student entered into a clash. Suddenly one of them opened fire. The injured have been identified as Manjit Singh and Daljeet Singh, both in their 20s.

School principal Amritpal Singh said a Class-12 student had taken leave last week to attend a court hearing. When he returned to school on Tuesday, English teacher Jasvir Singh allegedly thrashed him for not taking permission from him, though he had taken permission from the class in-charge, he said.

After student’s parents complained to the principal on Wednesday, the teacher apologised. However on Thursday, the teacher again thrashed the student and his parents again came with a complaint.

Both injured have been admitted to the Ludhiana Civil Hospital. While one received a bullet injury, the other was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon.

Ludhiana rural SSP Varinder Singh Brar said cross FIRS have been registered for attempt to murder at Sidhwan Bet police station. The persons he opened fire is yet to be identified, he said. The teacher and student will be questioned, he added.
