10 killed, 38 injured in three road mishaps in J&K

Six killed in Udhampur; three in Kishtwar; head-on collision in Ramban leaves trucker dead

JAMMU:TEN people, including two women, were killed and 38 injured in three separate road accidents in Udhampur, Kishtwar and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said Saturday.

A private bus skidded off a hilly road and fell into a deep gorge near Chaner area of Majalta in Udhampur district around midnight when its driver lost control over the wheels, a police officer said.

The bus was on way to Srinagar from Jammu, he added.

“Five people, including a woman, died on the spot and another succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, said Udhampur senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Rajeev Pandey.

Thirty five other passengers were injured in the mishap, the SSP said, adding that they were undergoing treatment at Government Medical College (GMC) hospital, Jammu.

A team of officials from the district, headed by the tehsildar, rushed to GMC hospital to help the injured.

The SSP said the Jammu-srinagar highway was closed for traffic due to blockade but the driver of the ill-fated bus took an interior route to dodge traffic police and

ferry the passengers to Srinagar.

In another accident, three people, including a young woman, were killed and three injured when a cab fell into a deep gorge at Dadpeth-mugalmaida­n in Kishtwar district around 9.40 am on Saturday, officials said.

The cab was on way to Kishtwar when the accident happened, the officials added.

A driver, Gurdev Singh of Jammu, was killed in a head-on collision between two trucks near Ramban on Jammu-srinagar national highway on Saturday morning, the officials said.

Meanwhile, governor Satya Pal Malik has expressed grief over loss of lives.

In a condolence message, the governor conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.

The governor directed the administra­tion to provide best medical treatment to the injured in the accident and wished speedy recovery to them.
