Two siblings among 4 killed as car plunges into canal in Ludhiana

Victims were returning home after eating out, the car crashed into railing before falling into Sidhwan canal

LUDHIANA: Four persons, including two siblings, were killed after their Hyundai i-20 car plunged into Sidhwan Canal near Municipal Corporatio­n D-zone office at Sarabha Nagar here on Friday.

All the four occupants of the car drowned in the canal, police said, adding that the bodies were later fished out. The deceased were identified as Kashish Arora, 21, Bhavneet Singh Juneja, 27, his sister Sanya Juneja, 24, and Dinesh Chander, 27.

The deceased were returning home after eating out. “All four were old friends and Chander had come to Ludhiana from Lucknow to appear in an IELTS exam. He was staying at the house of Sanya and Bhavneet. Four of them had gone out to have dinner. They were returning home when the accident happened,” said Sarabha nagar police station in-charge sub-inspector

The car belonged to Kashish Arora and he was driving it. The mishap occurred around 11.30 pm and has been captured on surveillan­ce cameras installed under the safe city project. The SHO added that the car was overspeedi­ng. Kashish lost control over the vehicle following which it plunged into the canal after crashing into the railing, he added.

According to rescuers, the victims got stuck as they failed to unlock seat belts. After autopsy, the bodies of Kashish, Bhavneet and Sanya were handed over to families for last rites. Police are waiting for the family of Devesh to send body for autopsy. The police have started inquest proceeding­s under sections 174 of the CRPC following statement of kin of the deceased.
