Post-matric scholarship: Students protest, demand release of funds
JALANDHAR: Students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category staged a protest against the Union and state government, for not implementing the post-matric scholarship, near Dilkusha market here on Saturday.
They demanded funds under the scholarship be released.
Students said educational institutes were neither admitting SC students nor allowing them to appear for examinations.
They alleged that three private educational institutes had denied students admission under the under the post-matric scholarship scheme.
One of the protesters, on condition of anonymity, said that they will intensify protests as many education institutes in the state were not allowing students admitted under the scheme to sit in examinations due to pending fees.
Under the post-matric scholarship scheme, SC students are awarded scholarships ranging from ₹230 to ₹1,200 per month, which are directly transferred into their accounts. the post-matric scholarship scheme, state-wide protests will be launched.
Criticising minister of state for social justice and empowerment Vijay Sampla for not working for the welfare of schedule caste students, Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation president Chandan Grewal said despite being a Union minister, Sampla, who also belongs to the community, had failed to implement the scheme.
“The future of around 3.4 lakh students is at stake due to poor implementation of this centre-funded scholarship scheme,” he said.
He requested the government to implement the scheme and transfer funds directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries.
